This interesting capacitive water level sensor was found in Popular Electronics. The circuit can be used as a shield. The sensor consists of a glass tube or other impermeable material or even a capped wire that has a conductor inside it. Thus, the conductor and the water form the plates of a capacitor whose capacitance changes with the water level.
