This circuit is from Popular Electronics from October 1981. The diode can also be 1N4004 and the capacitor must have an isolation voltage of at least 250 V. The current limitation is done by the capacitor's own reactive capacitor, not being necessary more components. Up to 3 LEDs can be connected in series.
