This dimmer configuration is quite old, as it was found in a 1967 publication. The triac can be of a more modern type like one of the TIC series and the diode can be a 1N4002. The triac must be equipped with a heat radiator and for more modern triacs the load can have a much higher current, according to the capacity of the chosen type.
