White noise applied to an audio amplifier can be used as a relaxant, since it resembles the noise of wind, rain, or sea. A modulator circuit can do the imitation of waves with greater realistic effect. White noise is also used in testing telecommunications equipment and electronic musical instruments. The cymbal sound, for example, is obtained with a percussion generator coupled to a white noise generator to mix its signals. The figure shows a simple white noise generator that takes advantage of the thermal noise generated at the base / emitter junction of a general-purpose transistor (any silicon for Q1).
