In fact, the correct name would be a hearing aid amplifier. However, we use the name of the original 1973 publication. It is a headphone amplifier with a microphone and operating on only 2.4 V of power (two button cells). The circuit has a gain of 70 dB and the phone must be a high impedance magnetic headset. The original circuit uses germanium transistors.
