The SAA1027 integrated circuit was specifically developed to control stepper motors with a 500mA maximum current per phase. In the figure below we have the way to use this circuit with a step generator formed by a 555 integrated circuit. The circuit was obtained in an old publication based on information from the manufacturer of the integrated circuit.
