This circuit is suggested by Motorola and has logarithmic response characteristics. For signals of low intensity, the gain is greater and for more intense signals the gain falls, thus providing a wider range of operating intensities, without distortion or saturation. The power supply must be symmetrical. D1 diode can be any general purpose and the transistor supports equivalents. The 10k ohm trimpot serves to adjust the off-set current in the circuit so that the output voltage remains at zero in the absence of an input signal.
